'Swimming with Swallows' Linoprint
This handmade print is of Ringstead Bay and White Nothe headland in Dorset, inspired by early morning swims in summer with the swallows swooping close by catching insects on the wing. It is one of my favourite things to do. Situated on the Jurassic coast in Dorset, this beautiful pebble beach with gorgeously clear water is a part of Dorset's coastline not far from Weymouth.
This is printed by hand from a hand-carved lino block using traditional printing techniques in my home in Dorset. It is a four-layer reduction linocut, a method of block printing in which each colour layer is taken from the same block. More lino is removed from the block for each layer and each colour is printed on top of the last. This means that an entire edition must be printed in one go – once you have carved into the block for the next layer, you can’t go back to print more. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as the ‘kamikaze’ printmaking. This is a Limited Edition of 30 handmade prints.
